South London artist Susanna Abel studied Art & Design at both Wimbledon School of Art and Kensington & Chelsea College. Influenced by a love of the natural world and all its raw beauty, her work focuses on wildlife and the human form and varies from the majesty of a bird of prey in flight to the disciplined focus of a trained boxer.
Reference material for her wildlife studies come mostly from photographs taken at wildlife reserves such as London Zoo, Biggleswade bird of prey centre, and Vauxhall City Farm.
More recently a trip to Kenya's National parks (Amboselli, Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara) have provided renewed inspiration.
Having spent some time taking Boxing classes, the movement of this sport is also of interest and reference material for these pieces come from both real life friends still on the scene, and photographs of established heavyweights such as Lennox Lewis and Muhammad Ali.
Susanna works in a combination of graphite, charcoal, aquarelle and inks to capture the movement and detail of her subjects. Some also feature silver and gold inks, and gold leaf for added drama. Susanna exhibits nationally and also sells at local events in London.
